God starts His story to us with an action of love. The rest of creation was spoken into existence, yet we were hand crafted from the dust (Gen 2:7) and the spirit of life was intimately breathed into our bodies by God. We see from the very beginning God loved His creation which was crafted in His own image (Gen 1:26-27).
He gave humankind dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. We had it made as God placed us in the Garden of Eden, with the commands to work and keep it. We had eternal life, and we had just one thing we couldn’t do, that was to eat from the tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil. What do you think we did? Well … we disobeyed the one who loved us enough to breathe life into our nostrils, filling our lungs. We disobeyed God leading to the sad part of the Love Story. We became separated from God by an immense and impassable gap known as sin.
The Human Race had fallen from their right relationship with God into a broken and distant relationship caused by sin (disobedience to God). This is the second movement in God’s Love story for us. Because of the fall now things like death, disease, and natural disaster plagued the human existence. Many wonder why would a loving God allow these things to take place. The “loving God” did not bring these things upon an innocent people. Instead we see that these things are a result of Man’s decision to sin. God wants you to follow Him because you choose to not because He forces you to, therefore we have been given free will. (God’s still knows our decisions before we make them, further He knew our choices before the foundations of the world.) What can we do from here? This sounds like a terrible place to be, in an eternal separation from our Loving Creator. There is Hope.
Hope is found in God’s redemptive plan that He has had since the beginning. God lovingly Created us, we Rebelled, He Redeems. The next piece to God’s Love Story is His redemption through a man known as Jesus. From the beginning we see that sin has a price and that is life, blood of the innocent must be shed to make remission for the sins of the guilty. In Genesis 3:20-21 we see the first sacrifice and it’s made by God for Adam and Eve through the innocence of an animal. It reads:
20 The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.
Skin garments were made from this innocent animal and were used to clothe Adam, and Eve. Much like we see God the Father, making a sacrifice of Jesus(God the Son) the only perfect and sinless man, and clothing us, the undeserving disobedient people, with Jesus’ Righteousness. This is the story of redemption told and prophesied about from the Old Testament. That one day there would come a perfect sacrifice to take the place of all mankind on a cross, absorbing the wrath of God and the punishment for sin. Because Jesus came to earth and lived a sinless life, and was crucified to take the punishment for our sins, we can be a new creation through Him, and we can live eternally with God in Heaven if we trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior of our life.
That leaves the final movement in God’s Love story; the New Creation. Since God Loved us He redeemed us, even though we did nothing to deserve it, remember that we are the one who willfully rebelled against the one who loved and created us. The new creation began with the life, death and resurrection of Jesus and continued through the Holy Spirit descending on those who believe, sealing the work of salvation in our lives and giving us the power to complete the plan and purpose God has for our lives. The new creation will not be complete until Jesus returns for His Church, and God the Father creates the new heavens and new earth for his people to inhabit. It is God’s desire to have a people that know Him, worship Him, serve Him, and glorify Him. In this new creation the things brought on us by our sin will be no more, there will be no more pain, death, or sadness. In the new creation their will be no need for the sun or any other source of light, because God will be he light that will illuminate the new heaven and earth. Those who believe in Christ will live with God eternally, worshipping Him and enjoying His presence forever.
God’s Love Story (His Word) can be shared with anyone in four points. With these four points you can go deeper into each topic as the conversation allows.
- God created and loved us
- We sinned (disobeyed)
- God redeemed us (through Christ)
- We are a new creation (when we accept God’s free gift of salvation)
I challenge you, the reader, to memorize these four points in your own words and share them with someone you care about this week. If you’d like you could send them here to read it on their own.
